Many factors determine the color of our teeth - staining is caused by lifestyle choices like smoking, drinking wine coffee, tea or fruit juices. Age is a factor as well as some antibiotics - even excessive fluoride can contribute. Other contributing factors include, tooth trauma or decay, tetracycline staining, old restorations discoloring or thinning enamel. The Smile Lounge technique works to reduce staining and discoloration, creating a brighter whiter, younger looking smile.

The treatment involves the application of a tooth bleaching gel designed specifically to remove stains and lighten discoloration of enamel and dentine. The gel is applied to the top outer layer of the teeth – the enamel – and then activated with a specially designed laser. The heat and light of the laser allow the product to penetrate enamel and remove discoloration without damaging the mouth, gums or teeth. The results are proven to be visible after one treatment session – our procedure involves the use of a shading guide before and after each treatment - this makes results measurable and unmistakable. Almost all individuals notice a considerable difference after just one treatment, some up to eight shades lighter. However, not everyone’s teeth whiten the same – the method is most effective on healthy, un-restored teeth. Not all stains can be lightened; typically only “organic” stains are removed by the procedure. The degree to which the teeth whiten is totally dependent on the type of staining, the amount of previous dental work that has been undertaken on the mouth, age of client and their medical history (antibiotics). We make sure that all of our clients know that although our technique does not harm crowns, veneers or fillings – it will not lighten them.

Improvements last from six months to a year – if the post treatment instructions are followed. Results can be significantly prolonged by using certain products and ensuring regular cleaning and general dental maintenance. Smile Lounge offers a home whitening kit to help prolong results, providing up to 60 treatments for use at home. A full list of aftercare instructions is given to each client as standard, insuring that individuals understand how to maximize the longevity of their whitening treatment.

No - the products we use are totally safe and the effect on teeth is no different from the effect of commonly ingested foods or regular dental products.

Some people experience sensitivity with their teeth post treatment. This is usually described by patients as sporadic, sharp shooting pains coming from their teeth. Due to the low level of Hydrogen peroxide used in our treatment – 99% of our clients do not experience sensitivity - any sensitivity should settle down after approximately 48 hours though. Your dental technician can recommend a special gel or mousse to apply to your teeth to help with the sensitivity. It is advisable to avoid very hot or very cold food and drinks within the first 48 hours of your whitening treatment.

Tooth whitening is deemed a cosmetic procedure, and can be administered by beauticians – However, at Smile Lounge we choose only to hire fully certified, skilled and licensed dental professionals with expert knowledge in oral health. Certified in dentistry, our technicians are trained to a high level of proficiency in all of our procedures to ensure that our stringent safety regulations are met. Smile Lounge has had full product safety assessments (PSA’s) carried out on our treatment products and home kits. All of our products meet the requirements of the Product Safety Regulations Act and Consumer Protection Act.

Some individuals may experience sensitivity during or after the treatment. In these cases we would recommend using Sensodyne toothpaste for a minimum of two days. In very rare cases you may experience slight swelling of the lips of gum irritation if this does occur apply an ice pack to the area for a short amount of time until the swelling subsides. Since we protect both the lips and gums during the procedure these side – effects are highly unlikely.

Although there is no evidence to suggest the treatment is damaging – as a precaution we do not treat pregnant women at Smile Lounge.

Smile Lounge provides the very best products and service for our clients. There are a number of well known brands in the market place that use similar bleaching chemicals to whiten the teeth as our own. Where Smile Lounge differs from other suppliers is with the application of the Power Swab prior to the bleaching process taking place.
